Why is lineage often discussed in the world of Kung Fu? What does it mean for the practitioner ?
Kung Fu begins with family.
In Kung Fu, lineage plays a central role. Each school functions like a family or a clan: this structure allows for the faithful transmission of teachings. Without it, knowledge becomes diluted or lost. The vitality of Kung Fu depends on this continuity.
An Active Lineage
We have the precious opportunity to be part of a lineage that is still alive and active. The sons of Master Lok Yiu – Lok Keng Kwong and Lok Keng Sang – continue to pass on their father's teachings. Trained from a young age, they safeguard the transmission of a system they know from the inside.
Establishment of Wing Chun in Hong Kong
When Ip Man arrived in Hong Kong in the 1950s, he initially taught a small group under challenging circumstances. He chose to train a few students with rigor and consistency, aiming to firmly establish Wing Chun in this new environment. Among them, Lok Yiu and Leung Sheung were the first to undergo regular and demanding training directly with the master. Few students had access to such a comprehensive teaching, transmitted through daily close contact.
Further Development of Ip Man’s School
Subsequently, as his school developed, Ip Man delegated much of the teaching to his advanced students. He continued to supervise certain practitioners he selected, but more sporadically. Many of the lineages known today did not benefit from the same level of close contact with him, which explains the differences in how Wing Chun is transmitted. Since he never officially appointed a successor, many claim lineage freely, sometimes without a direct connection.

We place great importance on discretion and simplicity, an attitude often found in Chinese tradition, where the quietest lineages are sometimes the most consistent. This approach attracts students who are primarily interested in the depth of practice rather than titles or visibility.
